Interesting Elena, a very good essay. I used to like Henry James when I read his books translated in Romanian. Now I'm in love with him by reading his novels in English.

Thanks for reading it. Yes, I know what you mean. James's "Portrait of a Lady" has been translated into Romanian many many years ago. I used to have a copy in my personal library, the one I first read at 16 when I was touched by Isabel's story.
I wrote this paper in my third year of college when I studied American literature.

Henry James was inspired and nurtured by his brother's work in psychology and philosophy.
Here is a link to one of the greatest American thinkers,William James:

By the way, have you seen the movie which was made recently, this past decade ? In my opinion the movie picture was a noble tribute to the novel.

THE PORTRAIT OF A LADY (1996)
Nicole Kidman, John Malkovich, Barbara Hershey, Mary-Louise Parker, Martin Donovan, Shelley Winters, Richard E. Grant, Shelley Duvall, Christian Bale, Viggo Mortensen, Valentina Cervi, John Gielgud, Roger Ashton-Griffiths, Catherine Zago
"Isabel Archer (Nicole Kidman) has just rejected a most lucrative marriage proposal in favor of her hunger to experience the world. Her defiant refusal stuns those around her. However, an admiring male cousin, Ralph Touchett (Martin Donovan), secretly lends his support to Isabel by convincing his dying father to leave her a generous share of his fortune. Yet Isabel's large inheritance does not bring her the freedom she so desires.

Her headstrong innocence proves no match against the manipulations of a duplicitous friend, Madame Merle (Barbara Hershey), who leads Isabel into an unfortunate marriage to a self-serving and devious dilettante, Gilbert Osmond (John Malkovich). Isabel suffers gravely as a result of her impulsive choice that ends in disaster. But after the dark truth behind Madame Merle and Osmond's web of deception and betrayal is revealed, Isabel awakens to a curious freedom. In emerging from the darkness of her folly, Isabel discovers her one true love in an epiphany that sends her forth in hopeful triumph, stronger and more selfless than she had ever imagined. "

Thank you for all this additional information.
Yes I saw the movie, but it is just a movie. The book is much more than any movie. This is how I fell. What about you?

About William James I do not know so much. I read about him when I discovered Gertrude Stein. Gertrude received a big influence from William in her early years as medical student. I am fascinated by Gertrude Stein these days and try to put on hold from the library everything written by her or everything that was written about her. In this way I discovered William James. Will need to read more about this fellow that had a famous brother.

:)
