VI âThe Count of Iggelinâ
But before I continue the story, I must tell you who, this man, Velvetâs match maker, was: He was 44 years old when he proposed Velvet, though his face looked so much older! He was almost 6 feet tall, he wasnât too thin or too fat, letâs say he was exactly how men should be in the matter of weight, and he was one of the aristocrats about whom the society knew, but whom, because they werenât involved in scandals or did not take part at glamorous parties, were considered weird and were avoided. He grew up in a rich family, his father being the owner of Parisâs most famous fashion âstoreâ. But his fortune did not come from the store, since this one was closed right after his father died. To be honest, I donât know what his fortune came from and I donât think somebody does. It is true his father and his mother, without mentioning other dead relatives, left him a big fortune, but rumors said it wasnât just that. Anyhow, far from being dangerous, because it is a âruleâ of nature that people who hide things cannot be kind, he was more sort ofâŚpathetic. He spotted Velvet one night, at the circus, and since then, he decided he will make her his wife. Of course the few friends he had, two or three, told him a thousand times it wasnât a good idea to marry a circus girl, but he would never listen to reasons. Some said he fell in love with her, others said he wanted a son and the majority believed he had seen something special in her, something that showed him she was going to be, the greatest countess he could find!! Personally, I think it was a little of everything, but itâs not my opinion which counts. So, as I was saying, he was so excited with the idea of a marriage with Velvet, that finally he decided to make the proposal. But he didnât consider one thing: that women are most of times, unpredictable and malicious, and Velvet, she was even more dangerous, for what she wanted, was something she would have done anything for!
