The scarecrow

let a tractor run me over
with its back wheel
let it scatter my skeleton all over the plain
let the bird map fly
a hand or a leg
a landmark or a wind vane
signs on the roof
announcing when and where
meteor-gods are going to fall
let the world learn how to cry
or to laugh

he lost his way
wandering through the stars
I would have a child
take him by the hand
while he still could do it
but
run over by a tractor that had to be discarded
wherever he came from
he was taken for a lunatic
it had gone to his head
that he could talk to the gods
so let him stay there
stuck into the ground
a landmark or a scarecrow!

Translated by Petru Iamandi
